McDonald's SA potato wedges

Potato wedges may be one of the weirder items that McDonald’s South Africa has ever sold. While many fast food chains have dabbled with thicker, fried (or baked) potato slices, they’re not a constant menu item. Will the big M be able to peel the market? (sorry, I couldn’t think of a better pun) What were the potato wedges like? Costing R14.95 and served in a packet usually reserved for the small serving of fries, the wedges are… pretty good. In continuing the comparison between McDonald’s fries, the wedges are big slices of potato, skin and all. I was surprised the potato skin was actually leftRead More →

grand big mac

UPDATE 2016-06-04: McDonald’s Kenilworth addressed my concerns in this article and provided me with a new Grand Big Mac to try out. I am happy to report that it was a much better burger, but still a large Big Mac. To celebrate 50 years of the Big Mac, McDonald’s South Africa launched two new variants of the burger. I finally got my hands on the Grand Big Mac and the offering is quite underwhelming. What is the Grand Big Mac? Simply, it’s a bigger Big Mac. Instead of the burger’s standard size, it’s now more akin to the ‘Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.’ Both theRead More →

On the 14th of May, McDonald’s South Africa (along with Australia) launched two new Big Mac variants: Mac Jr., and Grand Big Mac. As part of the iconic burger’s 50th Anniversary, there has been a lot of marketing surrounding the #BigMacYourWay campaign. The new Big Mac burgers The Mac Jr. consists of one patty, along with the standard garnish and sauce. The Grand Big Mac has two patties that are wider than the McFeast’s and burger contains all of the standard Big Mac trimmings. Both versions are on offer for a limited time. To my memory, SA received the Mac Jr. quite a few years ago. Though,Read More →

McDonald’s is one of, if not the largest fast food chain in the world. To date, the company has well over 36 000 stores worldwide and is a global force. And while you may be planning on picking up a few burgers for lunch, here are nine facts about McDonald’s SA that you can chew on. The cheese is imported from New Zealand – That’s right, the cheese in McDonald’s SA burgers is sourced internationally! It’s also created in such a way that slices peel away from each other with ease for faster burger assembly. Some of the beef supply comes out of Botswana –Read More →

McDonald's V&A Waterfront

A Big Mac, fries, and a Coke – how iconic is that image? It’s one that conjures up memories of eating out with your family, getting that Happy Meal Toy you’ve been waiting for, or midnight burger runs. Let’s face it, McDonald’s is the face of the fast food burger not only in South Africa but the world over. Last year, Next Window Plz was invited on a kitchen tour of the McDonald’s branch in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. We had the opportunity to pick the brain of the company’s Chief Operations and Supply Chain Officer, Jo Ann de Wet. Since 1995, McDonald’s hasRead More →

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish Header Image

The Fillet-O-Fish from McDonald’s is somewhat of an anomaly. Not only is it the only fish-based item on the menu but the staff doesn’t always know it exists. In fact, when ordering the item for review, the workers behind the counter gave me quite a few puzzled looks. I mentioned this particular item in my recent ‘5 items you probably didn’t know were on the SA McDonald’s menu‘ piece. Having eaten it more than a decade ago, I decided it was time to give the rarely spoken about offering another chance. What is the Fillet-O-Fish made of? The first thing to take note of is thatRead More →

Fast food outlets in South Africa have a strange habit of not advertising their entire menu to customers. McDonald’s is no stranger to this practice and after scouring their website, we found a couple items that you might not know that they sell. It’s a pity, really, as McDonald’s has far more menu options than meets the eye and almost everything can be made into a meal combo option as well. For this piece, we’ll be leaving off the McCafé menu as not every McDonald’s outlet has one of these. MegaMac This was all the rage a few years ago (a decade, maybe?), but theRead More →

Japan’s McDonalds restaurants are becoming PokéStops and Gyms for Pokémon Go players. This new collaboration marks the game’s first official sponsorship. The deal allows players to collect items and battle against peers at McDonalds’ 2 900 restaurants across the country. The announcement triggered a spike in shares in the Japanese unit of McDonalds, despite the fact that the game had not even been released in Japan when this announcement was made. According to the Wall Street Journal, this forms part of a wider “speculative frenzy”  over companies that will possibly profit through the location-based game that has recently taken the world by storm. The game,Read More →
